MALE
SURVIVORS

Male SURVIVORS of sexual ASSAULT

Sexual assault can happen to anyone, no matter the age, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Men/boys have similar feelings/ reactions as other survivors but might also have additional barriers. The YWCA of Greater Flint understands the conception that society has an attitude towards masculinity. Depending on the age of the assault men might respond differently. You're not alone, below is a list of men who have had the same experience.
  • Anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorder
  • Avoiding things, places and people because it reminds you of the abuse
  • Concerns and questions about sexual orientation
  • Feeling less of a man
  • Feeling on-edge all hours of the day
  • Blame, shame
  • Increased sense of isolation
  • Worrying about disclosing

support male SURVIVORS

When a survivor comes to share their story before going to the resources a few things will help.
  • Listen intentionally
  • Validate their feelings
  • Be direct expressing you're concerning and care
  • Use inclusive language that affirms the survivors gender identity and sexual orientation
  • Do not ask for details of the assault
