ARE THE YWCA AND THE YMCA THE SAME THING?
The YWCA and YMCA are two different organizations that come from a similar background, but they have never been affiliated with each other. YWCA was the first women's organization in the US and has survived throughout the late 19th century through today. YMCA focuses on youth development, health and fitness and social responsibilities. YMCA is not as strongly connected to the civil right and women's issues as the YWCA.
wHAT'S THE YWCA HISTORY?
The Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) was founded in 1855 in London by Emma Robarts and Mrs. Arthur Kinnaird. The YWCA is the oldest and largest multicultural women's organization in the world. It has contributed to women in a variety of ways and has played a key role in many of the major movements in the U.S. in race relations, labor union representation, and through developing and implementing empowerment programs for women.
did the ywca's name change?
Yes, in 2015 we formally changes our corporate name from the "Young Women's Christian Association" of the United State of America, Inc. to “YWCA USA, Inc.” Our name change reflects YWCA’s diverse and inclusive nature. In our early years it was “a Christian sisterhood” that drove our work. Today, our organization is driven by a commitment to social justice, no matter someone’s religion. Our updated name provides YWCA with the opportunity to engage a broader spectrum of individuals in our crucial work to eliminate racism and empower women.
