YWCA RACIAL JUSTICE PROGRAMS

RACIAL JUSTICE THROUGH EFFORT AND UNDERSTANDING...

In 2001, thanks to a capacity building grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, the YWCA was able to establish a Racial Justice department. The YWCA's Racial Justice department helps community members develop their understanding of racism and take personal and collective action to challenge it.  It is also committed to working collaboratively with other anti-racism initiatives in the wider community.

Initiatives include:

"Challenging Racism" Workshops

This 12-hour workshop is based on the belief that racism is "carefully taught" and absorbed from the earliest ages.  The purpose of the workshop is to engage individuals in a lifelong process of unlearning, relearning, and ally-building.  Its goal is to have participants commit to addressing racism in their personal lives and in communal and societal contexts.

"Challenging Racism" provides structured opportunities to build shared understanding, to make sense of difficult information in a "safe" environment, and identify action steps we can take together.  As a result of the "Challenging Racism" experience, participants will be able to intervene appropriately in racist situations and be a more effective ally.

FACTER
The YWCA plays an active role in FACTER, Flint Area Citizens To End Racism.  Support is focused on two action teams:  Education and Information/Communication.
