YWCA DOMESTIC VIOLENCE & SEXUAL ASSAULT SERVICES

 

The YWCA of Greater Flint offers comprehensive services to individuals who are dealing with abusive relationships and/or the trauma of sexual assault.

 
COUNSELING
Individual, family and group counseling services are available for adults and children who wish to address issues pertaining to family interaction, sexual assault, incest or other forms of abuse.
 
LEGAL ADVOCACY

Because the legal issues and the court system is often difficult to deal with, the YWCA of Greater Flint’s Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services offers assistance such as:

  • Information about the criminal justice system and how it works
  • Staff who can act as liaisons and client advocates with the courts, the legal profession, police agencies and social services
  • Assistance with Personal Protection Orders
  • Court support - availability of a staff member to attend court proceedings with the client
 
RECOVERY GROUPS
Professionally facilitated groups are available for women who are dealing with issues of abusive relationships. Topics include:
  • Issues of power and control and understanding the cycle of abuse
  • Exploring emotions: guilt, denial, and anger.
  • Building self-esteem
  • Improving communication skills
 
PARENTING WORKSHOPS
Sessions are designed to help parents build or rebuild a positive parent-child relationship. Topics include:
  • discipline
  • self-esteem
  • identifying needs
  • developmental stages
 
SOLUTIONS
Solutions is an 8-week group that provides information about anger conflict resolution, assertiveness skills and healthy relationships. This group is for those individuals who want to improve their communication skills.
 
CHILL - Anger Management And Violence Prevention For Youth
Civility Helps Individuals Live Longer - "CHILL" - is a group for young people, ages 9-18, who have difficulty managing anger at home, at school, or in social situations. The objective of the group is to assist teens to come to a deeper understanding of themselves and to learn and practice acceptable behavioral choices.
 
ANGER CONTROL EDUCATION
Anger Control Education is a group that meets weekly for 8-15 weeks. In general, participants have acknowledged responsibility for inappropriate anger management and/or have been referred by the courts.  The purpose of the group is to offer new coping skills to individuals who have problems controlling their anger in public and/social situations.
 
Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIP)
Individuals may be referred to either 15 or 26 weeks of a domestic violence intervention program. These groups offer alternative methods of conflict resolution and anger management to men and women who are abusive in significant relationships. Topics include:
  • issues of abusive power and control
  • conflict theory
  • communication
  • healthy relationships and support systems
  • outreach/follow-up services
 

SAFEHOUSE EMERGENCY SHELTER

SafeHouse provides safe emergency shelter and supportive services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault throughout Genesee County. The length of stay in SafeHouse is up to 30 days with extensions depending on circumstances. There are no fees for service. Upon leaving SafeHouse, individuals may still access YWCA services. SafeHouse shelter services include:
  • emergency shelter
  • referrals to community resources
  • food
  • clothing
  • legal advocacy
  • child care
  • individual counseling
  • counseling for children
  • support groups
  • educational classes
